2014 ZOOMA Florida Expo and Mocktail Party

Disclosure: I was provided with a free race entry as part of the ZOOMA Florida Race Ambassador program.

One week after I completed the Dopey Challenge, I found myself getting ready for another race weekend. This time I was headed to Amelia Island for the ZOOMA Florida Half Marathon. When I ran this race last year, I was coming off of my very first full marathon and did not feel ready for to run a half marathon. Going into this year’s race, I felt the exact opposite. I didn’t have any lingering soreness or exhaustion. I was ready to take on a half marathon.

On that Friday afternoon, Krissy and I met in Tampa before driving to Amelia Island. Normally, Pete comes with me for my big races to be my cheering section and to enjoy the race location. Unfortunately, he had to work that weekend so he couldn’t come with me. Krissy was also going to be solo that weekend so we decided to be roommates. I was really excited about getting to spend the weekend with her and the other race ambassadors.

We arrived at the Ritz Carlton Amelia Island (the host resort) a little after 6 pm and checked into the hotel for the night. After dropping off our bags in the room, we headed downstairs to the race expo to pick up our packets and check out the vendors.

At 7:00 pm, we headed over to the Honest Tea Mocktail Party. This year’s theme was “Let’s Get Fizzical” and featured the Honest Tea Fizz drinks. I seriously love the Fizz drinks because they taste like soda without actually being soda. I gave up drinking soda regularly a long time ago but every now and again I crave a sweet, fizzy drink. Oh and who doesn’t love a totally awesome 80’s themed party?

The Mocktail Party was also a great chance to meet some of the other race ambassadors. We already knew each other virtually but it was awesome to meet everyone in person. The party was also an excellent opportunity to meet some of the other race participants.

After the party was over, Krissy and I decided that we needed to eat to our pre-race dinner. I was starving by this point and really needed to eat. We decided to check out one of the hotel’s restaurants, Eight. As soon as I saw Chicken and Waffles on the menu, I knew exactly what I was going to get. Whoever came up with the idea of making this yummy combination into sliders was a genius! We also decided to split and order of sweet potato fries.

Once we were finished eating, we headed back up to our room to get some sleep. Thankfully, we didn’t have to wake up super early the next morning for the race. An 8 AM race start SOOO much better than a 5:30 AM start time!

Weekly Workouts: January 13, 2014

After crossing the finish line of the Walt Disney World Marathon and completing my amazing collection of medals for the weekend, I started to notice just how depleted my body really was from the race weekend. On Monday morning, I woke up with a nasty little head cold that was here to stay. I was honestly afraid that the cold would prevent me from running the ZOOMA Florida Half Marathon on Saturday morning.

Monday: Rest (Sick Day)

Tuesday: Rest (Sick Day)

Wednesday: Rest (Sick Day)

Thursday: Rest (Sick Day)

The first four days of the week were spent just trying to get through the day. A simple action would take 10x the normal effort to complete it. To make matters worse, Pete woke up feeling sick too. Both of us being sick at the exact same time is not very much fun at all! I finally started feeling better on Thursday but I didn’t want to take a chance on getting worse before the weekend.

Friday: Rest (Sick Day)

On Friday, I met up with Krissy (<— my new running coach!) for an awesome weekend in Amelia Island. Since both of our significant others weren’t able to come with us for the weekend, we decided to make it a girls weekend. When we arrived at the hotel, we headed off to the race expo and the mocktail party. (Recap coming soon!)

Saturday: ZOOMA Florida Half Marathon

  • Long Run – 13.11 miles, 3:00:00 (total time), 13:43 min/mile avg. pace

When I woke up on Saturday morning, I felt ready to run the half marathon. I am not sure if it has anything to do with not running all week or what but my legs didn’t feel sluggish at all. I didn’t want to push myself too hard though because I am still recovering from the Dopey Challenge. I ended up running the first half of the race much faster than the second half. It wasn’t until about Mile 7 that I really started to listen to my body and slow down. In the end, I was pretty happy with my finish time given how tired my legs actually were. (Race Recap coming soon!)

Sunday: Best Body Bootcamp Fitness Test

  • Fitness Test – 25 minutes

One of my fitness goals for the year includes taking some time to really focus on strength training. To help jump start that goal, I signed up for the next round of Best Body Bootcamp with Tina. Since the new round of BBBC is starting on Monday, I took some time on Sunday to do the Fitness Test to see exactly where I am starting.

How did your workouts go last week?
