Last week was a surprisingly good week in terms of my workouts. While I had some pretty long days at the office, I still managed to make it to the gym twice for some LiveFit Trainer workouts as well as Orange Theory Fitness Class. I ended the week with my first race of the fall season. Finding time to make fitness a priority is not easy when your job requires a ton of extra hours. Many weeks, I struggle with having enough energy to make it through the work day never mind spending an hour at the gym afterwards. Last week proved to me that I need to focus on balancing my life a little bit better. I have a long couple of months coming up and I need to find ways to make sure that I fit my workouts.
Monday – Strength Training + Easy Run
- Strength Training – Arms and Abs (LiveFit Trainer Day 43, 60 min.)
- 2.07 miles, 28:02 minutes, 13:32 min/mile avg. pace, 148 BPM HR
After spending four weeks attempting unsuccessfully to complete Weeks 5 and 6 of the LiveFit Trainer program, I decided that I needed to just move on. It seemed that my efforts to follow this program closely was not going very well. On Monday evening, I made the decision to just move on to the next week. I started my workout with some stretching and then headed to the weight room. The first workout of Week 7 was an arms, abs, and cardio workout. Once I was finished with the arms and abs portion of my workout, I jumped on the treadmill for an easy 2 mile run.
Tuesday – Orange Theory Fitness Class
- Orange Theory Fitness – Power class, 58:00 minutes
- Intervals – 2.16 miles, 27:00 minutes, 12:31 min/mile avg. pace
On Tuesday, I originally planned to head to the gym after work for a legs workout. Outside of my Orange Theory Fitness classes, I really haven’t been doing any sort of legs work. I know those classes kick my butt and I really do enjoy them. However, they are putting a serious damper on my LiveFit Trainer program progress. By the end of the work day, my coworker had decided that she really wanted to go to an OTF class after work. I agreed and we signed up for the late class. When we arrived, the coach informed us that the class was a power-focused class and that it would feature a whole bunch of ‘All Out’ sprints both on the treadmill and in the weight room. I was not exactly thrilled at the prospect but I didn’t shy away from it. It was one of the toughest workouts I have ever done!
Wednesday – Rest
Thursday – Rest
Wednesday and Thursday was super long days at the office. When I don’t leave work until after 8 PM, I find it really tough to muster up the energy to go to the gym. The crazy hard OTF class on Tuesday night left me so sore that I don’t know if I would have gone to the gym even if I wasn’t completely exhausted after work those two days.
Friday – Strength Training + Easy Run
- Strength Training – Shoulders (LiveFit Trainer Day 46, 41 min.)
- 4.07 miles, 54:01 minutes, 13:16 min/mile avg. pace, 149 BPM HR
On Friday evening, I left work early enough to finally make it back to the gym. I really needed to lift some weights and knock out an another run before my race on Sunday morning. Not wanting my legs to be too sore for Sunday morning, I decided that it was a better idea to do one of the strength workouts that focused on my upper body. I chose to do the shoulders workout because I haven’t done a workout dedicated to that muscle group in a few weeks. I need to get better about balancing the muscle groups that work out every week. Once I finished my shoulders workout, I jumped on the treadmill for an easy 4 mile run.
Saturday – Rest
On Saturday, I was planning to go to the gym at some point to do a strength workout and some cross training. I have been severely lacking in the cross training and yoga department this year. I know that I can’t make up all of those workouts that I have missed but I know that I need to be better about incorporating them into my workout routine during this Dopey Challenge training cycle. Unfortunately, I ended up being a lazy bum and didn’t make it to the gym. I did manage to pick up my race packet and spent fours at the office trying to get ahead of my workload for the upcoming week.
Sunday – Sea Dog Brewery 5k
- 3.11 miles, 36:00 minutes, 11:37 min/mile avg. pace, 167 BPM HR
Sunday morning was my first race of the fall season. I ran a 5k race around Clearwater and completely surprised myself with the results. Honestly, I wasn’t sure if all of the work I have been doing in the last few months would actually pay off. My goal pace for the race was 11:45, which is approximately a 36:20 finishing time. I finished the race in 0.4 seconds over the 36 minute mark! My average pace was 11:37 min/mile and I actually felt like I could have gone faster! I don’t think I could have set a new 5k PR time but I do know that I could have finished faster and that is amazing to me.
How did your workouts go last week?
