Good afternoon! How was your weekend? Mine was pretty darn good if I do say so myself. I actually did it. I finished the 2015 Dopey Challenge at Walt Disney World! I’m still in shock with what my body can do and handle every single day. When I did the challenge last year, I had no idea what to expect and I was afraid that my training wasn’t good enough to get me across the finish line of the marathon. This year, I knew what to expect and I also knew that my training was not anywhere close to what I wanted it to be. Both years, I managed to pull it off and I am ecstatic. Well I am at least thrilled that I did it. I will say that the marathon was not what I wanted it to be at all. I know that next year I am really going to have to push myself and really work hard if I am going to achieve my goals.

My original plan for Monday was to get in some cross training on the elliptical and a decent yoga workout. I really needed to stretch after my intense weekend of running. Monday evening did not go according to my plan and I decided that I really just needed a rest day. It was actually kind of nice to take a break and enjoy the evening. Of course, I really should have started packing instead of sitting on the couch and watching TV.
Since I didn’t do any packing on Monday, I had to get everything together on Tuesday night. I am such a procrastinator when it comes to packing. Most of the time, I end up waiting until the morning we are leaving. I couldn’t do that this time since we were actually leaving for two vacations. While I was hoping to fit in a 2 mile shakeout run and some yoga on Tuesday night, I spent the whole night packing and getting ready for the next two weeks.
On Wednesday, there wasn’t really any chance to me to fit in a workout nor did I want to. I had a short day at work followed by a trip to the Health and Fitness Expo. I knew that we would be doing plenty of walking around at the Expo and I needed to keep my legs as fresh as possible for the upcoming Dopey Challenge. The nervous energy that I had going on was not very helpful at all!
On Thursday morning, I woke up at a crazy time to run the first leg of the Dopey Challenge, the Walt Disney World 5k. Over the years of running Disney races, I have NEVER seen a wind chill advisory warning. I have seen plenty of heat advisories but never one for wind chill. I was so cold and the wind was brutal. Being a Florida girl, I am not used to running in that weather at all. Thankfully, I managed to stay somewhat warm and finished the race. Oh and even though I walked most of the race, I still came in under the required minimum pace.
On Friday morning, I woke up at an even crazier time to run the second leg of the Dopey Challenge, the Walt Disney World 10k. Even though it was a little bit warmer than Thursday, I was still freezing as I waited for the race to start. Unfortunately, I never really got warm during the race. My friend and I were taking the race as easy as possible to conserve ourselves for Sunday’s race.
While waiting in the corrals on Saturday morning, my friend and I decided that we wanted to see if we could improve all of our races times from last year. We had already done that for the first two races so we thought it would be fun to see if we could do it for the last two. We started off the half marathon at a decent walking pace and discussed when we would be ready to start running. We decided that the castle would be our best bet because the energy as you make your way into the Magic Kingdom is so exciting that you feel the need to run. We tried to take it easy but in the end we ended running a little more than we should have. My feet were sore and I was worried about how would we feel during the marathon on Sunday. We did manage to finish the half marathon 9 minutes faster than last year.
I woke up on Sunday morning with a serious case of déjà vu. I guess that waking up at 3 or 4 AM four mornings in a row will do that to someone. My legs felt good and I had high hopes of getting a shiny new marathon PR. I had figured out what I needed to reach my goal for the weekend and my friend had a pace band that would help us reach our goal for the day. The weather wasn’t terrible for the first time all weekend and as we crossed the starting line I had no doubt in my mind that we would reach our goals. However, I was a bit wrong. My unintentional lack of training caught up with me early and we weren’t able to pull of goals. While I was upset about not reaching either of my goals and not getting a PR, I was also thrilled that I had somehow managed to complete my second Dopey Challenge.
How did your workouts go last week?
