Merry Christmas Eve! What are your plans for today and tomorrow? After we get the prep work done tonight for tomorrow’s feast, Pete and I are going over to a friend’s house for a Hawaiian Christmas Party. I am not sure how I am going to pull off the tropical attire though. I may have to dig out some of the cruise clothing. My family is coming over to the house tomorrow for an all day feast and Christmas Movie binge fest. I will be baking some cinnamon rolls for breakfast. Pete will be smoking a turkey in our outdoor smoker. This is our first attempt at smoking a whole turkey so I am really hoping everything goes well.
Even though we are in the midst of the holiday season, Pete and I have decided that enough is enough in terms of our health and fitness. Before we left for our week long cruise, I stepped on the scale to weigh myself out of curiosity. I haven’t been keeping track as much as I normally do lately and I wanted to know how much my weight has changed. Honestly, I think I stopped keeping track because of how discouraged I have been by the weight gains I have seen over the last few years.
When I started this journey, my goal was to get down to a healthy weight and maintain it. I only succeeded at the first part of my goal. At my heaviest recorded weight, I made the decision to get my health under control. I started counting calories and exercising regularly. After almost 9 months, I had lost 60 pounds and was finally within the healthy weight range for my height. So I stopped counting calories. I figured that I knew how many calories my body needed to maintain my weight loss. I was very wrong.
For the last 3 years, my weight has not been maintaining or leveling off. In fact, I have seen a slow, steady weight gain and have put back almost 30 pounds! The final straw for me came when I crossed the finish line of this year’s Wine and Dine Half Marathon. I have run that race 4 years in a row. Each year, my time has gotten slower. Each year, my weight has gotten higher. After this year’s race, I decided that I wasn’t going to feel the disappointment of another poor finishing time every again. I realize that not training hard enough for the race could have caused my slower time but I also know that my overall average pace is related to my weight.
Knowing that I had a rough couple of weeks coming up, I waited until I knew I would be able to seriously work at my eating habits and my overall health. On the Monday morning after we got back from our cruise, I jumped on the scale to determine what my new starting weight was. I am a little disappointed by the number that I saw on the scale but my weight was not nearly as high as I expected it to be.
- Original Starting Weigh In: 204.8 lbs.
- Starting Weigh In (12/15/14): 171.4 lbs.
- This Week’s Weigh In (12/22/14): 169.0 lbs.
- This Week’s Weight Change: –2.4 lbs. (-1.4%)

In an effort to stay on track and achieve my goals, I have started counting calories again. I swore up and down that I would never count calories again but I needed to do something. I went back and forth with that decision but counting calories really worked for me before. I am also going to focus on increasing my water intake and sticking to an actual workout plan. I have always struggled with that and I am so tired of not achieving my goals or being where I want to be.
Every Wednesday (most of them anyway), I will post my current weight and discuss some the challenges I experienced during the week. My goal is to once again get down to a healthy weight and maintain it this time. I also want to accomplish the multitude of fitness goals that I have but that is a whole other blog post. The next few weeks will be tough but I wanted to get started before the New Year started.
How are you staying healthy this holiday season?
