And just like that, the second week of marathon training is finished. Last week was a surprisingly good week. I was expecting things to be a little tough since Pete and I spent most of the week in Chicago. I don’t usually have very much success with sticking to my training plans when I go on vacation. Plus, I knew that we would be walking all over the city and I usually convince myself that is a sufficient workout.

Knowing that I was going to be out of town for most of the week, I decided that I wanted to get in at least one solid strength workout. Pete and I met at the gym after work on Monday to do another NROLFW workout. I started off with 15 minutes on the elliptical and some light stretching. Then we headed over to the free weights for our strength workout.
After work on Tuesday, I headed home to start packing and getting ready for our trip. I am the queen of procrastination so I had a lot to do before our plane left on Wednesday evening. I also had a 2 mile easy run on my training plan that I didn’t want to miss. I hoped on the treadmill in our garage and attempted to knock it out. Unfortunately, my watch wasn’t charged and completely reset itself. Eventually, I was able to finish my run.
On Wednesday afternoon, Pete picked me up from work and we headed over to the airport to catch our flight to Chicago. We finally made it to our hotel room just after 10 pm. By the way, our hotel totally reminded me of The Shining and is supposedly haunted, which means I didn’t sleep very well at all. Despite having an easy 2 mile run on my schedule for Thursday, I decided to put it off until Friday so I could feel a little more comfortable with our surroundings.
Friday morning, I woke up and headed out for an easy 2 mile run around Grant Park. That park is located is right in front of our hotel so it was a perfect location for me to run. If I had a few more miles on my plan, I probably would have checked out more of the lake front trail.
Saturday was spent wandering around the city and hanging out with my little sister. She actually helped is take some engagement photos at a beautiful location near the Lincoln Park Zoo. Oh and we spotted four weddings going on in the same general area! I think that the Lincoln Park Zoo area may be a little over done for us.
On Sunday morning, I met my sister at the southern edge of Grant Park for the Chicago 10k. This race was built into my training plan so it served as my long run for the week. Going into the race, I knew that I was going to aim for the 2:1 intervals and stick to them. I have spent most of the summer running that interval and was really comfortable with it. When I cross the finish line, I was trilled with my finish time. My last decent 10k race was back in October 2012!
