Day 1: August 29, 2013
Our trip started with a late night flight from Tampa to Los Angeles. Pete picked me up from work just after 4 pm and we headed straight over to the airport for our 7:45 flight. Thankfully, our flight was a direct flight from Tampa to LAX because we were both exhausted. We landed around 9:30 (Pacific Standard Time which means it felt like 12:30 in the morning to us), picked our bags and headed to shuttle for Disneyland. Los Angeles is much larger than I expected it to be and we didn’t make to our hotel until after 10:30. We checked in at Disney’s Grand Californian Resort and Spa and headed straight up to our room to crash.
Day 2: August 30, 2013
On Friday morning, we woke up at 6 AM ready to go. It was very evident that our bodies had not quite gotten used to the time difference. I hardly ever sleep past 9 AM ever, which is the time that my brain thought it was. We showered, changed and went in search of breakfast. One of the first differences between Disneyland and Walt Disney World is that everything is within walking distances. We literally walked outside of our hotel and found ourselves in the Downtown Disney District! I knew that Disneyland was smaller but I was sooo not ready for how much smaller it actually is.
After wandering around Downtown Disney for a little bit, we came across the La Brea Bakery Café and decided to check it out. The food was delicious! I ordered the Double Dipped French Toast with apple cinnamon sausage. My boyfriend went with the Vegetable Omelet. I am pretty sure that they used a sourdough bread for my breakfast because the flavor was amazing. Also, the batter had the perfect amount of cinnamon.
We finished our breakfast and decided to continue looking around. When we found ourselves at the Disneyland Hotel, we figured that we should probably go ahead and get in line for the Disneyland Half Marathon Health and Fitness Expo. By 9:15, there was already a line for the merchandise and packet pick up with the Expo not opening for another 45 minutes.
Once we were inside the Disneyland Hotel Convention Center, the packet pick up line moved very quickly. Within minutes of walking inside, I had my race bib and other essentials in hand and was making my way upstairs. I also received a wrist band for the Coast to Coast Challenge when I picked up my packet. Oh and I was totally nervous and completely excited when I picked up my race packet. I was well aware of the fact that I hadn’t trained nearly as hard as I wanted to for this race challenge.
This is my “I can’t believe I am about to do this!” face …
This is where things got a little hairy. Remember when I mentioned that there was a line for the merchandise as well as the packet pick up? Well those people flooded the Expo and I am not quite sure that the staff was ready for that. Despite the issues, I was still able to find everything I was looking for … including all of the new and completely amazing runDisney medals! I am sooo looking forward to earning that Dopey Challenge medal! I can honestly say that I am not quite sure I will ever take it off.
While I waited in the merchandise lines, my boyfriend decided to walk back to the hotel and check out the pool. Once I was finished with the Expo around 1:30, we went in search of something to eat lunch. The Storyteller’s Café in our hotel was calling our name! To start our meal, we decided to try the corn chowder because I had heard amazing things about it. It was creamy, full of flavor, and had just a hint of spice to it. I really think the chicken in the soup added the right touch. Plus, the corn muffins went with the chowder perfectly!
With a weekend full of races ahead of me, I didn’t want to eat something too crazy so I played it safe with the Slow Roasted Turkey Sandwich. It may have been the safe choice but it wasn’t lacking in flavor at all. I love the turkey, avocado and bacon combination. My boyfriend decided to try the Half Pound Char Broiled Burger with cheese. I think he was craving a cheeseburger and this one definitely satisfied that craving.
After lunch, we went back up to our room and hung out for a little bit. We weren’t planning to stay very long in our room. Unfortunately, we ended up staying in our room for the rest of the evening. The time change and traveling across the country totally caught up with us and we literally passed out before 7 pm!
Stay tuned! Up next will be my 2013 Disneyland 10k Race Recap!
So, which of those runDisney medals are excited about earning?
