2012 Birthday Cruise Day 1

Cruise Embarkation Day – 12/1/2012

The alarm started going off at 5 AM. My boyfriend and I had absolutely no desire whatsoever to get out of bed because we didn’t get very much sleep the night before. Packing, laundry and errands had kept us up until after midnight so we were exhausted. Somehow, we managed to both take showers, finish packing, make the coffee, eat breakfast, say goodbye to our beloved fur babies and get out the door before 8 AM. Amazing, right?


Our goal was to make it to the cruise terminal by 11 AM so we could board the ship early. We made a quick pit stop near Haines City for some bottles of water to take on board. We drink a ton of water and didn’t want to have to pay for any when we were at the different ports. After several hours of driving, we made it to the Port Canaveral Cruise Terminal around 10:45 (right on schedule)!

Getting through security wasn’t too painful. The lines weren’t very long and we were boarding the Carnival Dream in less than an hour. As we boarded the ship, I noticed that it was beautifully decorated for the holidays.


We unloaded the bags we wanted delivered to our stateroom, parked the car and proceeded slowly through the security lines. Seriously, the security for cruising isn’t any easier than at airports! Finally, we were all checked in and were on the Lido Deck of the Carnival Dream. Since we arrived so early, we weren’t allowed to go to our stateroom yet so we headed straight for the lunch buffet.

Since we were on the Carnival Dream last year for our birthdays, we knew exactly where everything was and what we wanted for lunch. Hello Mongolian Wok station and Tandoori station! I truly have missed you!

Around 1:30, we headed to our stateroom to unload our carry-ons and check things out. Thankfully, our checked luggage arrived shortly after we did. Last year, I got really nauseous while unpacking because the ship was already moving. In an attempt to avoid motion-sickness, we immediately unpacked and got our room situated. Then it was time for our safety briefing.

Finally, we heard the ship’s horn signaling our departure. We turned our cell phones to ‘airplane’ mode and disconnected from the digital world. Then we headed up to the Serenity deck (the Adults-only section of the ship) to watch the Carnival Dream leave Port Canaveral.


We weren’t really hungry yet so we decided to hang out on the Lido Deck for a while. The Dream went through some updates recently so we wanted to check out the new bars. We tried out the Thirsty Frog Red Beer and it was quite delicious.

After we finished the beer, it was time to watch our first sunset at sea. While we watched the sunset, our stomachs started growling so we decided to get ready for dinner.


When we got back down to our stateroom, we quickly got ready for dinner. I could feel some of the effects of motion sickness starting to set in so tried to avoid the cramped quarters of our stateroom as much as possible. Last year, we choose to eat during the ‘Late Seating’ time, which meant we didn’t get seated until 8 pm. This year we decided to try out the ‘Your Time Dining’ to see what that was all about.

One of the things that we love about cruise is the delicious food served in the main dining rooms. Tonight’s dinner was no exception! For our appetizer course, we split an order of chips with salsa and guacamole. I also had the gazpacho andalouse, which was delicious. My boyfriend had the shrimp cocktail.

For dinner, I chose Chicken a la Grecque, which a broiled boneless chicken breast with herbs and tomato confit, virgin olive and basil oil. My boyfriend had the Tender Braised Beef Brisket with Gravy.

We weren’t really hungry after all of that food. Somehow I talked him into at least trying one of the desserts. We decided to split the fresh fruit plate and the vanilla crème brulee.

After dinner, we wandered around the ship. We were hoping that we would have enough energy to go to the ‘Welcome Aboard’ show but we quickly realized that we weren’t going to last long. We made it back to our stateroom, turned on the television, and passed out!

    AHHH!!! We had Thirsty Frog on the Carnival Legend back in May and loved it! We were hoping it’d be available on our 3day to Nassau on the Sensation, but it wasn’t :( We usually do the late dining too. I didn’t like how they turned the lights out in the set time dining- made for bad pics. Before we’d always done “your time dining”
