Day 1 of Cruise (11/26/2011): Port Canaveral/Embarkation Day
Today my boyfriend and I set sail on a seven day cruise in celebration of our birthdays, which are both this week.
Around 8:15 this morning, our friends picked us up and we made our way to the side of the state. The cruise ship, the Carnival Dream, docks at Port Canaveral, which is about a 3 to 4 hour drive from Tampa. Boarding started at noon and we wanted to get there as soon as possible. We made it to the cruise terminal around 11:30. It only took us about 45 minutes to check our bags, get through security and board the ship.
Once onboard, we headed immediately to our staterooms to drop off our carry-on bags. Since our rooms weren’t ready yet, we decided to go in search of some food. Apparently, the other guests onboard had the same idea because the buffet on the Lido Deck (10) was absolutely packed with people. We tried food from the Mongolian Wok and the Tandoori Station. Oh my gosh! While both dishes were delicious, my boyfriend and I LOVED the Indian cuisine from the Tandoori Station.
Since the crowds were insane on the Lido Deck, we decided to go find the Serenity Adults Only Retreat on the Sun and Sky Decks (14 & 15). We knew instantly that we would be spending a lot of time in this area. No running or screaming kids. Comfortable decks chairs, couches and “teacup” chairs. Did I mention their was a bar up there too. It was a truly serene area.
After some time in the Serenity Retreat, we went back to our staterooms to see if they were ready and if our luggage had arrived. The rooms were ready but no sign of our luggage yet. Our staterooms were located on the Panorama Deck (11) and were part of the Cloud 9 Spa. They were having tours of the Spa & Gym Tours so we decided to see what came with our Spa Staterooms. The Spa Package included unlimited access to the Thalassotherapy Pool and the Thermal Suites.
Once the tour was complete, it was time for the safety briefing. We were instructed to head over to our Muster Stations to learn what to do in case of an emergency. Our Muster Station is A4 and located in the Encore Theatre. I am pretty sure that I was the only one paying close attention to the safety instructions because everyone around us was fooling around an talking. I am sorry but if the ship goes down I want to know exactly what to do.
At 4:30, we went back to the Cloud 9 Spa for the reception and to see if we won any of the prizes. Unfortunately, we didn’t win anything and we ended up missing the ship setting sail. Still hoping to catch the sunset, we headed back up to the Serenity Retreat, where we found some “teacup” chairs and ordered the daily drink special, “Fun Ship Special”. It was rum based and I didn’t love it but it was a great way to start the week.
After sunset, we headed back to our staterooms to find our luggage waiting for us. We took the time to unpack our bags. While we were unpacking, I started feeling nauseated due to the rocking of the ship. I never get motion sickness … ever! I didn’t get sick but I needed to get some air. My boyfriend convinced me to go for a run so I did. I found the jogging track up on the Spa Deck (12). I forgot to pack my Nike+ timing chip so I had no way to keep track of running. The plaque at the track indicated that it would take seven laps to equal one mile. It took me about 10 to 15 minutes to finish the seven laps because the wind was blowing me all over the place. After my run, I went back to room to shower and get ready for dinner.
Around 8:15, we headed downstairs to dinner. We chose the late dining time so that we would have plenty of time during the day to enjoy the ports and activities. We were assigned the Scarlet Dining Room, which is located on the Lobby Deck (3) in the aft of the ship. When we got to dinner, we met our server Dewa “Big D” and his helper Budi. All the menu selections sounded delicious but in the end I went the vegetarian route. I chose the gazpacho andaluz soup as my starter and grilled tofu steaks with sautéed vegetables as my main course. For my dessert, I couldn’t resist the warm chocolate melting cake with vanilla ice cream for my dessert.
After we finished dinner, we wandered around the ship some more before we headed done to the Encore Theatre on the Lobby Deck to watch the Welcome Aboard Show. During the show, we saw teasers of the different types of shows that were going to be offered throughout the week. Our favorite part was the sneak peak of the Comedy Shows in the Punchliner Comedy Club. We agreed to check out as many of the shows as possible.
Once the show was over, my boyfriend and I decided to go back to our stateroom and pass out. It was long day and we were exhausted!
