Alternative Title: A Nerve Racking Race Day
Yesterday was a really busy day for me! Today, I wanted it to be the exact opposite. I wanted today to be filled with rest and relaxation so that I would be ready to go for the race. What I didn’t count on was falling asleep really early last night and consequently waking up really early this morning.
At 5:45 this morning, my eyes popped open. I tried everything to fall back asleep but nothing worked. I was wide awake! My brain started freaking about what today was: RACE DAY! The day I have been training and preparing for the last four and a half months of my life is finally here! Since I couldn’t fall back asleep, I just tried not to wake my boyfriend up. I think I must have fidgeted a little too much though because he was woke up around 7:30.
After showering and getting ready for the day, we ventured out to see what we could find around Disney’s Boardwalk for breakfast. First, we tried the continental breakfast near the hotel lobby. There was no place to sit and we didn’t want to take the food back to the room. Next, we headed over to Kouzzina, which is Cat Cora’s restaurant. Neither one of us was willing to wait 90 minutes for a table for two.
Third time was definitely the charm. We ended up grabbing breakfast from the Boardwalk Bakery. I think this is the hotel’s quick service restaurant because everything was pre-made (that morning of course). The customer area wasn’t very big inside but we could see the bakers hard at work making tasty looking breads. We grabbed our food and headed outside to sit at a table along the water. One of my favorite parts about this hotel is the fact that there are tables and benches along an actual boardwalk for you to sit and enjoy the view. We each had an egg and cheese croissant sandwich and split an orange.
After breakfast, we decided to enjoy the morning by walking around the boardwalk and the hotel. My boyfriend was very conscious of the fact that I didn’t want to wear out my legs so we didn’t walk very far or for too long. While we were walking, I couldn’t stop talking about the race and I think I was probably driving him a little crazy. I was nervous like crazy! Behind the hotel along the pathway to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, I saw a sign. It was the Mile Marker 12 Sign. (This is not the actual sign though. It’s just a placeholder for the real one.)
My boyfriend starting teasing me about not going back to the hotel room before I finished the race. If I can make it 12 miles, then I can totally finish the 13.1! We wandered around the pool area before heading back to the room. I was ready to start relaxing and he needed to get ready for an afternoon job he had booked. I was completely ok with that because we didn’t have any plans and well he didn’t need to see me in my complete state of nervousness.
After he left, I settled in for what I hoped would be a nice and relaxing afternoon. I started going through my pictures from the day before. I started writing my recap posts from the Meet Up and Eat Up event as well as the Health and Fitness Expo. I tried to catch up on my Google Reader. I even tried to stay off of Twitter and Facebook without much success. Nothing calmed my mind or my nervous stomach.
I forced myself to eat the other half of my sandwich leftover from last night’s dinner, which was absolutely delicious. I also enjoyed several cups of coffee, which was okayed by Jeff Galloway at yesterday’s event. The rest of fueling for the day consisted of Clif Bars because I didn’t want to have too much in my stomach. I spent the day drinking plenty of water so that I would be well hydrated.
Around 4, I laid out my outfit for the race, which included my white running shirt with my race bib attached, my new running capris, an iFitness racing belt to hold my phone and Clif Shots, my interval timer and my iPod. Instead of wearing my usual black headband, I went for my special Mickey themed headband.
Around 5:30, I started to get ready. I couldn’t stand the waiting anymore and I needed to start moving forward. My boyfriend called to wish me luck because his job was taking a little bit longer than expected. I wasn’t upset about that at all because that meant I would be able to get to the starting area sooner rather than later.
After getting dressed and ready to go, I packed a small bag with my flip flops, a sweater, a new shirt, baby wipes and deodorant. I left that bag on the bed though for my boyfriend to bring with him. I heard horror stories about last year’s bag check so I decided I didn’t want to waste time after the race trying to pick up my bag.
Just before 7, I grabbed another bottle of water, my pre race fuel and my iFitness belt (filled already) and left the room. I headed towards the bus depot at the front of the hotel and followed the signs for event transportation. OMG! This is really happening! There was a bus already waiting and it still had space available. Shortly after taking a seat, the bus started heading towards ESPN’s Wide World of Sports!
