As I sat on the bus taking participants to ESPN’s Wide World of Sports, I tried not to focus on all of the fears that had been running through my head today. I tried to remember that I just wanted to finish the race and have fun.
As the bus drove along Victory Way (a road I would be running along in a few short hours), I gazed out of the window trying to remain calm. My stomach was filled with those tiny butterflies intended to make my nervous energy skyrocket. Soon we passed by the assembled starting line, which I had seen them working yesterday when I came here for the Health and Fitness Expo and Meet Up and Eat Up event.
After getting off of the bus, I ran into someone that I knew from the Run Tampa running group and a Disney Running Forum (ROTE). She and I took some pictures in front of the grassy knoll before heading over to a meeting spot. I had planned to hang out with some of the other ROTErs before the race so that I wouldn’t be waiting around for 3 hours by myself.
Around 8, I ate my pre-race fuel (two servings of strawberry flavored Clif Shot Bloks) and finished my bottle of water. I wanted to make sure that I would have plenty of time to use the bathroom port-a-potties and digest my fuel before the race started. As soon as the sun went down, the temperature dropped and I spent most of the 3 hours freezing.
While we were waiting, the DJ tried to keep the crowd entertained. I did enjoy most of the music played and did dance around a little but it was mostly to stay warm. I actually was more entertained by the costumes that people were wearing. Around 9:30, the DJ told us to start heading towards our corrals. The group split up and headed towards Corral D.
Because I didn’t have a proof of time, I guessed that it would take me 3 hours to finish when I registered. This time placed me in Corral D, which I had no issues with. I didn’t want to feel pressured to start out faster then I wanted to. After getting into the corral, I realized I still had another 45 minute wait!
